table of contents:

Intro

"dont think itll always be this way, not comforted by anything i say; we were wrecks before we crashed into eachother." (song: sober to death)

in 2010, will toledo (born "william barnes") started a band by the name of car seat headrest. (although this was not the first time he dipped his toes into creating music; see: chptr. 5) it was originally a solo project, but later so-far-permanent members include andrew katz, ethan ives, and seth dalby. car seat headrest (also known as "CSH", or "CSHR"; if u suck :P) made 12 releases before signing with matador records, with whom they would release an additional 4 original albums.

their early sound is often described as low fidelity rock, with their later post-matador stuff toning down the lo-fi and focusing more on the rock aspect. their latest album "making a door less open" departs from both, being an EDM-disco-pop-rock-something-another. regarless of genre, their lyrics and sound are beautiful and impactful. they cover the topics of queer romance, failed queer romance, depression, and growing up, and more. me and many others feel a deep connection with their music, and hopefully someday you will too.

beginners TLDR

"i wont last too much longer. im already starting to run out of places for faces in my head- theyre all starting to look the same." (song: strangers)

as much as id love you to read this entire page, i understand most beginners probably arent all that interested in my ramblings so heres some brief recommendations to get you started. i usually suggest starting with the album "teens of denial" because its widely appealing while still preserving a lot of the aspects you'll find in earlier albums. my favorite tracks from that one are destroyed by hippie powers, drunk drivers / killer whales, and 1937 state park. if you think youll enjoy their more lengthy, lo-fi sounds, then id also recommend some tracks off of "how to leave town"; those being kimochi warui (when? when? when?) and i want you to know that im awake / i hope that youre asleep. if you enjoy those, come back here and finish this page for more recommendations!

Matador Releases

"and now ive got no one to pray to, and now ive got nowhere to stay the night, and its hard to be here at all." (song: kimochi warui)

for this chapter i will not be listing the albums in order of release, i will be listing them in order of how beginner-friendly they are. each album will be given a description including my listening recommendations for beginners, and a video made by yours truly with a small snippet from each song on the album, a sampler if you will. enjoy!
